Each student must submit a 2,000-word essay (comparable to a term paper for on-campus students). You can submit this electronically or through the conventional mail system to the instructor, who will read and grade it.The paper will be based on your reading and careful analysis of two or more of the supplemental readings given at the end of each lesson. These are in your course discussion material, not in your textbook. For example, the supplemental readings from lesson 1 include pieces from the Epic of Gilgamesh, Hammurabi’s Code of Laws, and more. Two or more readings from any lesson(s) in the course are what you will use to write your essay; it can be an analysis of a common theme found in the reading selections, or it can compare and contrast ideas. Supplemental information for the paper can be obtained from A History of World Societies, from the introductory material in the syllabus, or from some outside source(s).
In each case, you must make proper attribution through the use of simple footnotes, endnotes, or MLA notation style.
Papers should be typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins top and bottom, left and right. If you use a word processor (rather than a typewriter), print the paper in 10 or 12-point font (this will result in about eight pages).
Graded papers will be returned with comments.
