NCAA ELIGIBILITY

  • Students seeking NCAA initial eligibility certification cannot enroll in BYU Independent Study courses for core credit.

Recently the NCAA passed a new proposal, No. 2009-64, which addresses non-traditional courses and initial eligibility for high school athletes seeking eligibility at higher education institutions. Our high school courses that have been approved by the NCAA for many years will no longer meet the new criteria for core credit. Students seeking NCAA eligibility can enroll in any BYU Independent Study course for elective credit only.

We are reviewing and analyzing our course delivery processes to determine if the new criteria can be met using new course delivery technology. We are working together with the NCAA to comply with this new policy and we expect to be in compliance in the very near future.

The NCAA proposal doesn't affect our accreditation in any way. Our high school courses are fully accredited by the NWAC and DETC accreditation organizations and continue to demonstrate excellence in non-traditional distance education courses by winning national awards from the American Association of Collegiate Independent Study (AACIS) and the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA). We are one of the largest distance education programs in the country with enrollments in all 50 states and 58 countries throughout the world.

For more information regarding Proposal No. 2009-64, please see the NCAA Web site at http://www.ncaa.org.
