Adult High School Diploma Program

The BYU Independent Study Adult High School Diploma Program is designed for the student who is nineteen years of age or older and is a permanent U.S. resident or U.S. citizen. The program allows the student to complete his or her high school education through BYU Independent Study and requires the student to complete 24.0 credit hours; most of the required courses are worth 0.5 credit hour.

BYU Independent Study courses are secular in nature; therefore, a student's religious affiliation does not factor into whether or not a student is eligible to participate in the program.

Upon obtaining the required credits, a student will receive a diploma from the Provo (Utah) School District.

New Adult High School Diploma Program Requirements Effective September 1, 2010:
Students who are enrolled in the Adult Diploma Program are required to follow the requirements currently listed on the Web site. This policy applies to all previously enrolled students as well as new students.

How the Program Works

A student must complete a minimum of 3.0 credits through BYU Independent Study, regardless of credits earned at other schools. A student must also pass a basic skills assessment test (TABE 41: Test of Adult Basic Education) before he or she can secure his or her high school diploma. The TABE measures ability level in the areas of math, English, and reading and must be taken with a certified proctor. The test may be ordered over the phone by calling the Registration office at 1-800-914-8931 and paying a $10 registration fee. The test may be taken at any time during enrollment in the program, but must be passed before being eligible to receive a diploma.

Although the Adult High School Diploma Program is designed to be a four-year course of study, a student may complete the requirements in less time. High school credits that a student has earned from other schools, which are accredited by legitimate accrediting agencies, are generally transferable and may be applied toward meeting program requirements.

How to Apply

BYU Independent Study has an open enrollment policy, which means that a student can apply to the Adult Diploma Program at any time during the year. Application

Note: The student biographical section is listed on the application so that the student may communicate any specific goals, concerns, problems, requests, etc. This information will assist the High School Program Department in assessing how to best meet the needs of the student.

In order to complete the application process, the student must provide the following: a completed application form, a $40 non-refundable application processing fee, and an official transcript (with seal and signature) from each accredited school (grades 9-12) he or she has attended. The student should mail or fax the application materials to the address listed below. Only the application may be faxed. Faxed transcripts cannot be accepted.

BYU Independent Study
Attention: High School Programs
106 MORC
Provo, UT 84602-0300

Fax: 1-801-812-8549

Once the application materials have been received by the High School Programs Department, a minimum of three weeks, depending on volume, is required to evaluate the student's transcript(s). The student will be notified by mail once a decision has been made.

Note for Utah Residents: Utah residents who take and pass the GED test after June 30, 2009, are no longer eligible to apply for the Adult High School Diploma Program. The GED becomes their Utah High School Completion diploma. Current students who choose to take the GED, and pass the test will be withdrawn from the program. Students who fail the test may apply to or remain in the Adult Diploma Program. This policy change does not affect those living in other states who either pass or fail the test.

After Acceptance

Upon acceptance to the program, a student is provided with a new transcript which displays the credits that have been earned and outlines the remaining courses he or she must pass in order to complete the program. A student is required to complete at least two courses every six months in order to remain active in the program. However, a student may also request an extension when extenuating circumstances arise. Most course work may be completed at home, but final examinations must be taken under the direction of a certified proctor. A student may call 1-800-914-8931 to find a proctor in his or her area.

Note: Due to the nature of distance education learning, BYU Independent Study cannot designate a student's status as part time or full time.

Note: High school-level courses taken in the 7th or 8th grades cannot be accepted in the Adult Diploma Program.
