Our mission is to provide excellent online university and high school courses.
Partnering with academic departments and faculty at BYU, we are the primary resource for online and blended education on campus, and we also extend those university courses to students at other institutions.
We offer online high school courses to students everywhere in preparation for a university education and lifelong learning, and make those courses available for use by local educational professionals.
We believe the earnest pursuit of this mission can have a strong effect on the course of education and will greatly enlarge BYU’s influence in a world we wish to improve.
Brigham Young University Independent Study is a program that operates under BYU Continuing Education. BYU is accredited as an institution by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). BYU Independent Study high school and middle school programs are accredited by the Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC), a division of AdvancED and Middle States Association's Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS). BYU Independent Study has won numerous national course awards from the University and Professional Continuing Education Association and the American Association of Collegiate Independent Study.
Independent Study is one of the nation’s largest non-profit distance education programs. It provides the majority of college courses offered to students enrolled in the BYU Bachelor of General Studies program; supplements BYU, BYU-Idaho, BYU-Hawaii, and LDS Business College curriculum portfolios; and provides online curriculum to middle school and high school students.
BYU Independent Study courses often help fill gaps in course availability for face-to-face classrooms on campus or meet other academic needs. Independent Study offers more than 550 online courses—university, high school, middle school, and free noncredit courses. Enrollment is open to anyone, any time of the year, with a year to complete most courses.
BYU course credit can be transferred to most educational institutions across the nation and around the world.
