BYU Independent Study products expand educational opportunities for students worldwide. Our 450+ courses have been accessed from all 50 states and more than 105 countries. We’re proud of our history and have big plans for our second century.
BYU Independent Study is an accredited program* that operates under BYU Continuing Education and is one of the nation’s largest nonprofit distance education providers.
Independent Study High School
We offer online high school and middle school courses that help students prepare for a university education and lifelong learning. Our courses make it possible for students to fill course gaps, recover credit, get ahead, and enjoy scheduling flexibility. For advanced students, we offer Advanced Placement, honors, and other specialized course options. We also offer free tutoring for many courses, including World Languages.

Independent Study University
Partnering with academic departments and faculty at Brigham Young University, we extend university course access to students who are seeking or will seek an undergraduate degree at BYU or another school. Additionally, high school students don’t have to wait for graduation—after they verify course transferability, dual enrollment is just a few clicks away. Credits earned in our 200+ accredited university courses can transfer to BYU and almost all other U.S. schools.

Do you need an online program or curriculum? Now your district, schools, and teachers can use BYU Independent Study High School Suite, our turnkey online curriculum, to create a blended classroom, teach virtually, or offer mastery-based credit recovery. BYU Online High School
Students can now earn a high school diploma from Brigham Young University. BYU Online High School provides a way for students to obtain a high-quality U.S. high school education from home—wherever they may live. BYU OHS offers three accredited enrollment options:
- Open Enrollment
- Semester Enrollment
- Adult Education
*At the university level, Brigham Young University is accredited as an institution by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). The BYU Independent Study high school program is accredited by Cognia and by the Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS).
