Are your students eager to go the extra mile? Idaho’s Advanced Opportunities (AO) program offers students a way to get ahead and take advanced courses at no cost to the student’s family. If students graduate early they may qualify for an Early Graduation Scholarship for use within the Idaho Public Colleges and Universities. BYU Independent Study (BYU IS) is an approved provider of overload courses and has served hundreds of Idaho students over the past six years.
Idaho students with a full credit load are eligible for state-funded overload courses. As an Advanced Opportunities-approved provider, BYU Independent Study offers 60+ online high school and middle school-level courses that qualify for overload funding. Homeschool students who are dually enrolled in Idaho public schools may also be eligible for state-funded overload courses. By taking overload courses and accelerating their education, students can explore career opportunities, graduate early, and qualify for state scholarship opportunities.
Students who enroll in a BYU IS course benefit from the freedom to complete a semester course at their own pace and with the help of friendly support staff.
BYU Independent Study offers many AO courses taught by Idaho-certified high school teachers. The list of approved BYU IS courses is posted below and include the following:

Courses are designed to challenge students by having them apply concepts in a way they may need in the real world. Challenging students to use new skills while learning improves knowledge retention. The success of our students is essential to us, and our students agree.
Gain mastery of a subject while using innovative methods to ensure retention.
While mastering a subject, you are tasked with a myriad of real-world challenges that enable you to learn new skills in the areas of collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking.
These skills are essential to excel outside of the classroom.
Attributes are soft skills that improve social and emotional learning.
Our courses include deep questions and challenge students to apply knowledge in ways that help students become more emotionally resilient and prosperous—personally and professionally.
Based on course performance, students can earn Skill Credentials that they can share as digital badges on job applications, resumes, and social media channels to verify of gained proficiencies. These Skill Credentials help our students stand out among their peers.
Each course has a badge representing a skill and attribute that students can earn.
To earn credentials, students opt in and complete challenges in addition to their regular coursework.
For example, in the 9th-grade world geography course, students can earn the respect attribute and communications skill by presenting to a family member something they admire about another culture.
Skills and attribute credentials offer tangible evidence of capabilities to colleges and employers. These credentials set our students apart from other applicants by showing they have successfully mastered desirable skills that benefit the organization.
Below are examples of how students have leveraged the benefits of BYU Independent Study to achieve their goals.

If you are planning to graduate from high school this year, please read this important information regarding your Independent Study high school course.
Following are exceptions to the one-year course completion deadline:
Our courses are comparable to a university, high school, or middle school semester-length course. They are aligned with the Carnegie Unit system. Most of the high school courses are one-half of 0.5 or a Carnegie Unit, which represents one-half (usually one semester) of a school year’s study in a particular subject. We encourage you to plan to complete your course in a realistic amount of time to get the maximum benefit without rushing through the material.
Once you have completed your coursework and exams, it may take up to three weeks before you receive a notice of course completion (due to mail and grading times).
All university course grades are posted on a Brigham Young University transcript. To ensure a course grade will appear within a particular semester or term (for financial aid or graduation deadlines), we must receive all completed coursework and exams (including retakes) by the deadlines below:*
*There are no exceptions to these deadlines. However, please note that courses completed before the first day of class of the subsequent semester or term may still appear in the prior semester or term on the transcript.
