Financial Need Course Scholarship recipients are eligible to reapply one year after the previous scholarship’s award date. This policy also applies to expired and unused scholarships that were awarded.
*Mabel Brown Disability Course Scholarship recipients are eligible to reapply four months after the previous scholarship's award date. Before reapplying, the awarded course must be completed, expired, unused, or withdrawn.
BYU Independent Study does not give or accept federal financial aid. The program delivers a flexible alternative for students by offering open enrollment, self-paced, year-long courses resulting in credit that can be transferred to many institutions. Because of this unique format, we are unable to declare full or part-time student enrollment status and attendance. As a result, we are unable to sign any of the following:

No, the awarded scholarship is intended for new BYU Independent Study enrollments; past enrollments cannot be refunded or reimbursed.
You can purchase any high school course currently offered in the catalog. If you desire college-level curriculum, the awarded scholarship may be applied toward the university course.

BYU Independent Study provides a wide range of middle school courses designed to cater to students’ educational requirements, equipping them to transition to high school, regardless of whether they opt for in-person, hybrid, or online schooling.
Students enhance their communication skills through reading age-appropriate works of fiction and nonfiction, developing their vocabulary, analyzing literature, and practicing various writing strategies such as research papers, persuasive writing, and other genres.
Our middle school math courses encourage students to develop problem-solving abilities and mathematical proficiency, introducing them to mathematical concepts like functions and integers, exponents, and basic geometry as preparation for high school math courses.
Middle school science courses introduce students to foundational scientific concepts within the realms of biology, human body systems, earth sciences, chemistry, and physics—all in relation to real life and as preparation for higher-level science learning.
Seventh- and eighth-grade social science courses include survey courses on World History and four courses on United States History, from origins through recent times.

Therefore, the students are responsible for deciding whether their countries, educational institutions, or professions accept credentials or academic credits granted by BYU. Students may be subject to tax requirements in addition to tuition costs. It is the student’s responsibility to determine whether these taxes apply in their respective countries.
