Position Description

 

BYU Independent Study is seeking enthusiastic and qualified individuals for a number of online, part-time teaching positions to help instruct the 50,000 high school student enrollments we experience each year.
We are looking for experienced teachers (primary residence in Utah or Idaho) who are licensed in the states of Utah or Idaho, grades 9–12, with endorsements in the following discipline areas:

Brigham Young University Employment Requirement Willingness to abide by the BYU Honor Code and, for those who are Latter-day Saints, maintain the standards of conduct consistent with qualifying for temple privileges. Duties

 

  • Grading and posting student work

  • Providing constructive and detailed feedback to students

  • Responding to student and staff questions promptly

  • Conducting brief one-on-one student checkpoints (applicable to NEW Instructor-Guided courses)

  • Maintaining effective and efficient recordkeeping procedures

  • Interacting with students and parents via email and webinars

  • Providing a positive environment to engage students in the learning process

  • Meeting professional obligations through efficient work habits

  1. Apply Online

    University students may apply directly. If you are a student in high school or middle school, please work with your school counselor.

  2. Receive Approval

    You’ll receive an email confirmation if you are awarded a scholarship.

  3. Purchase Course

    Your confirmation email will include a redemption code to cover the full or partial amount of the course.

Transcripts

High school/middle school transcripts

Once a student has completed a middle school or high school course and the final grade has posted, an official transcript can be ordered and sent to a desired location. Transcripts can be ordered as an electronic copy or paper copy to be mailed. Transcript questions can be sent to byuis-transcripts@byu.edu; please be sure to include Net ID information when emailing questions.

Financial need scholarships

Financial Need Course Scholarships

We offer course scholarships to aid students who have financial need. 

Requirements

  • Be 18 years of age or older 
  • Demonstrate financial need in a written format
  • Have at least a 2.7 cumulative grade point average (GPA)
  • Provide college or high school grades on a transcript for all schools attended since ninth grade
  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or tax resident, OR be an international student residing outside of the U.S. or U.S. territories

Disability scholarship

Mabel Brown Disability Course Scholarship

We offer course scholarships to students with disabilities.

Requirements: 

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Are single (not married)
  • Have a least a 2.7 cumulative grade point average (GPA)
  • Have a chronic physical impairment, disability, or medical condition, limitation, or illness
  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or tax resident, OR be an international student residing outside of the U.S. or U.S. territories

Other scholarships are available on a limited basis, contact cescholarships@byu.edu.

Key criteria that impact consideration:

  • Show experience taking independent educational courses
  • Complete application with the required information
  • Write succinctly and clearly on your application
  • If a partial scholarship is awarded, the student is responsible to pay for the remaining portion of the course purchase
  • Once a scholarship is awarded, withdrawal from the course redeemed with a scholarship result in forfeiture of funds and no refund or voucher will be available

 

 

Common reasons for not receiving scholarships:

  • Not following directions properly to submit the application
  • Not submitting all parts of the application and transcripts to our office in time to meet the deadline
  • Not meeting the GPA requirements

 

 

Students are not eligible for course scholarships if they are:

  • Enrolled in the BYU Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) program, which offers financial aid to its students
  • A recipient of a BYU Independent Study Scholarship within the past year*

 

 

Reapplication policy:

Financial Need Course Scholarship recipients are eligible to reapply one year after the previous scholarship’s award date. This policy also applies to expired and unused scholarships that were awarded. 

*Mabel Brown Disability Course Scholarship recipients are eligible to reapply four months after the previous scholarship's award date. Before reapplying, the awarded course must be completed, expired, unused, or withdrawn.

 

 

Financial aid:

BYU Independent Study does not give or accept federal financial aid. The program delivers a flexible alternative for students by offering open enrollment, self-paced, year-long courses resulting in credit that can be transferred to many institutions. Because of this unique format, we are unable to declare full or part-time student enrollment status and attendance. As a result, we are unable to sign any of the following:

  • Consortium Agreements
  • Student Loan Deferment Forms
  • FAFSA Form
  • State Verification of Enrollment and Attendance Forms (including for driver’s license applications)
  • Form I-20 Certificate of Eligibility for Non migrant Student Status
  • Social Security Administration Forms (requesting enrollment and class attendance information)
  • Any other form requiring declaration of part or full-time student enrollment status or attendance

  • Financial need must be demonstrated in writing.
  • Student needs a BYU account (Net ID) and must be associated with the educator’s school. (Create Net ID).

It is helpful, but not required, to indicate on the application any amount the student is able to contribute toward the cost of the course.

  • Student Net ID (Create Net ID)
  • Both the student and the educator Net IDs must be connected to the same school; enter your Academic Institution to connect

  • Student’s correct email address
  • Student’s GPA
  • Student’s financial need explanation
  • Educator’s recommendation for student

How to Redeem a Homeschool Scholarship?

 

Once awarded you will be given a code to redeem the course through the online catalog. Follow the steps to complete the purchase process. Your child can immediately begin coursework and will have up to a year to complete the course. When finished, they will receive a transcript and credit for the course that can be applied toward high school graduation.

FAQs

  • Do you need a specific GPA to participate?

 

No, homeschool scholarships are awarded based on a family’s financial need and not on a student’s academic performance.

 

  • Can the scholarship be applied retroactively to previous enrollments?

 

No, the awarded scholarship is intended for new BYU Independent Study enrollments; past enrollments cannot be refunded or reimbursed.

 

  • What can I receive from an awarded scholarship?

 

You can purchase any high school course currently offered in the catalog. If you desire college-level curriculum, the awarded scholarship may be applied toward the university course.
